Cadillac Launches New XT5 PHEV in China
Cadillac continues to expand its vehicle lineup in the Chinese market as customers in the United States wait for the second-generation XT5. The company has introduced a plug-in hybrid version of the crossover called the XT5 PHEV.
Cadillac confirmed that the new model uses a plug-in hybrid system featuring two electric motors and a 5C lithium battery, combining a conventional combustion engine with an electric powertrain.
Chinas Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has revealed details of the powertrain. The vehicle is equipped with a 148-horsepower internal combustion engine, along with two electric motors. The front motor produces 215 horsepower, while the rear motor generates 148 horsepower.
Updated Design with Electrified Touches
The XT5 PHEV receives several exterior changes that distinguish it from the conventional version, most notably a redesigned front fascia with a modified grille featuring illuminated elements.
The crossover also borrows styling cues from Cadillacs newer models, including the Optiq, Lyriq and Vistiq, along with an active air intake.
The vehicle features newly designed dynamic-style wheels paired with red brake calipers, adding a sportier touch to its appearance.
At the rear, official images show additional changes, most notably the absence of visible exhaust outlets, in keeping with the vehicles plug-in hybrid powertrain.
Lidar and Advanced Semi-Autonomous Driving Technology
One of the most notable features of the XT5 PHEV is a roof-mounted lidar sensor, accompanied by side cameras and turquoise lighting elements. These components are associated with an advanced driver-assistance and semi-autonomous driving system.
The system is based on Momenta R7 World technology, and the vehicle is expected to receive the Xiaoyao Zhixing system already offered on some Buick models sold in China.
The system is designed to assist drivers with urban navigation and a variety of complex driving situations, including local roads, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings and lane changes.
These technologies place the XT5 PHEV among vehicles using advanced systems to analyze their surroundings and assist drivers in everyday driving conditions, while keeping the driver responsible for the vehicle.
Cadillac Focuses on Chinese Driving Conditions
Cadillac says the XT5 PHEV will provide a more confident and intuitive assisted-driving experience designed to handle Chinas diverse and constantly changing road conditions.
The company also says the system goes beyond simply recognizing roads and obstacles, aiming to improve its ability to understand, predict and respond to situations more naturally in complex real-world driving scenarios.
The XT5 PHEV reflects Cadillacs strategy of developing vehicles specifically for the Chinese market that combine hybrid powertrains with advanced driver-assistance technologies, as competition intensifies to offer increasingly sophisticated intelligent features inside vehicles.
